For Canadians and Americans 'Day of the Dead' is better know to us as 'Halloween'

Mexico celebrates a yearly tradition called Day of the Dead during the last days of October and the first days of November. Due to the duration of this festivity and the way people get involved it has been called "The Cult of Death."

As in many Latin American countries, Mexico commemorates the Day of the Dead or All Souls’ Day on November 2nd. The legacy of past civilizations is graphically manifested on this occasion through people’s beliefs that death is a transition from one life to another in different levels where communication exists between the living and the dead. This communication takes place once a year throughout the country. Differing from the Roman Catholic imposed ritual to commemorate All Souls’ Day, which is observed in many countries, the custom established by pre-colonial Mexican civilizations become a ceremony where indigenous beliefs blended with Catholic beliefs. Therefore, the Day of the Dead in Mexico is not a mournful commemoration but a happy and colorful celebration where death takes a lively, friendly expression. Indigenous people believed that souls did not die, that they continued living in Mictlan, a special place to rest. In this place, the spirits rest until the day they could return to their homes to visit their relatives.

Storm Report: Tropical Storm Rina is approaching the Riviera

According to several sources Tropical Storm Rina, the 17th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, may strengthen and pass north of Honduras before approaching Mexican resorts on the Yucatan Peninsula, the National Hurricane Center said.

Rina, about 135 miles (215 kilometers) north-northeast of Cabo Gracias a Dios on the Honduras-Nicaragua border, was moving north-northwest at 6 miles per hour, the center said in a website advisory at 8 a.m. Miami time. The system had sustained winds of 40 mph and is forecast to grow into a hurricane, with winds of at least 74 mph, later this week.

Flash floods and mudslides may occur over mountainous terrain in the region, the NHC said. Rina could trigger as much as 5 inches (13 centimeters) of rain in northern Honduras and 3 inches in the Cayman Islands before nearing the Yucatan.

A tropical-storm watch, indicating winds of at least 39 mph are possible within two days, is in place for the coast of Honduras from Punta Castilla to the Nicaraguan border. The center predicted the storm will be near the coastal resorts of Cozumel and Cancun in three to four days.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. For more information on ways you can prepare to protect against hurricanes, feel free to visit www.hfmexico.com

First Mexican Truck Crosses US Border

This is making headlines everywhere-  For the first time under the North American Free Trade Agreement, a Mexican truck crossed into the U.S. on Friday bound for the country’s interior, beginning a program that was stalled for years by concerns it could put highway safety and American jobs at risk.

The tractor-trailer hauling a large steel drilling structure crossed the border at Laredo nearly two decades after passage of NAFTA, which was supposed to improve cargo transportation between the two countries.
At a ceremony before the truck set off for a Dallas suburb, the owner of the Transportes Olympic trucking company said he considered his fleet’s access to the U.S. interior like being invited to a friend’s house.
“We have to be extra orderly and very respectful,” Fernando Paez told dignitaries of both countries and a crowd of 300 people. “We will demonstrate that we can operate safely and efficiently.”

The driver of the Freightliner truck was Josue Cruz, who waved from the cab, flashed a thumbs-up and thundered toward the bridge over the Rio Grande. He was expected to unload in Garland today. Trucks have crossed into the interior before but only as part of a short-lived pilot program that began in 2007 with a limited number of vehicles. President Barack Obama’s administration canceled it in 2009, and Mexico retaliated by placing tariffs on a wide range of American goods.

Hours before Friday’s ceremony in the border city of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico announced it was suspending the tariffs. But the Mexican government said they could be reinstated if the U.S. does not honor the accord.
The $2 billion in tariffs was imposed on 99 U.S. products, including Christmas trees, onions, oranges, apples, juice concentrates, toothpaste, deodorant and sunglasses. Mexico reduced the tariffs after signing the trucking agreement with the U.S. in July and then removed them completely Friday.

NAFTA, signed in 1994, had called for Mexican trucks to have unrestricted access to highways in border states by 1995 and full access to all U.S. highways by January 2000. Canadian trucks have no limits on where they can go. But until now, Mexican trucks have seldom been allowed farther than a buffer zone on the U.S. side of the border, where their cargo was typically transferred to American vehicles.

The public debate surrounding the accord had mostly focused on the safety of Mexican trucks. But labor unions and other groups were strongly opposed to the agreement, saying it would cost Americans trucking and other jobs. The U.S. Department of Transportation says the safety concerns have been resolved. Electronic monitoring systems will track how many hours the trucks are in service. Drivers will also have to pass safety reviews, drug tests and assessments of their English skills. Mexico has the authority to demand similar measures from American drivers.

Riviera Maya Unique Attraction- Uxmal´s Pyramid of the Magician

The Pyramid of the Magician, also known as the House of the Dwarf (Casa del Adivino, or Casa del Enano), is one of the most famous Maya monuments of Uxmal, an archaeological site in the Puuc region of Yucatan, in the northern Maya Lowland of Mexico. The site, located not far from Mérida beside a road to Campeche, has attracted many visitors since the time of Mexico's independence.

It is the central structure in the Maya ruin complex of Uxmal. The Pyramid of the Magician is also referred to as the Pyramid of the Soothsayer.  Uxmal is located in the Puuc region of Mexico and was one of the largest cities on the Yucatan Peninsula. At its height, Uxmal was home to about 25,000 Maya. Like other Puuc sites, the city flourished from 600-1000 AD, with the great building period taking place between 700 and 1000 AD. The name Uxmal means 'thrice-built' in the Mayan Language- referring to the many layers of construction of its most imposing structure.

Several phases of the temple constructed on top the pyramid are visible while ascending the pyramid from the base to the top. Five construction phases have been detected (Temple I, II, III, IV, V). The facades of the different phases were decorated with stone masks of the rain god Chaac, typical of the Puuc architectural style of the region.

The city of Uxmal was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 as it is considered that the ruins of the ceremonial structures represent the pinnacle of late Maya art and architecture in their design, layout and ornamentation. The Pyramid of the Magician is the largest building of the Uxmal complex. It is situated so that its western stairway faces the setting sun at the summer solstice.

An interesting fact about this site, is that as the spanish conquest beset the Yucatan- it would take some 170 years and the help of the Xiu Maya before the last recognized Maya stronghold fell (which was Itza, just north of Uxmal.) The Mayan´s also have preserved their language as well. Thus- to some effect-  the spanish quest for choosing to seize control thru combat has only proven to cause un-willed disunity amidst cultural preservation. The point being is that the Mayan´s have preserved their language up to today.

The pyramid, over which the actual temple stands, has a peculiar elliptical form.  Two staircases lead to the top of the pyramid. The Eastern staircase, the wider, has a small temple along the way that cut the stairway in half. The second access stair, the Western, faces the Nunnery Quadrangle and is decorated with friezes of the rain god Chaac. The Pyramid of the Magician is the first building a visitor encounters entering the ceremonial area of Uxmal, just north of the Ball Game Court and the Palace of the Governor and east of the Nunnery Quadrangle. The tourist entrance is near the foot of the Pyramid of the Magician

A perspective- what it looks like and sounds like to own in Mexico...

Have you ever wondered what it really looks like and sounds like to be an owner of Mexican property? What better way to understand what you might be getting into as you consider owning in Mexico than to hear the perspective of others…According to a recent source, getting a glimpse of what Mexican property ownership looks like to Canadians Wanda and Mark Eiler and their four children is a ¨two thumbs up¨ perspective. The Calgary family owns a couple of condominiums in Mexico, which they visit five or six times a year just hangin' out, soakin' up the rays and the laid-back Mexican lifestyle.

"We have owned in Mexico since October 2007 when we bought our first two-bedroom condominium on the beach," says Wanda. "Then last November (2010), we bought a second property, a three-bedroom condo in a neighboring building."

Among the many positives, the Eilers comment that ¨the look and feel of the development is spotless cleanliness, friendly and helpful staff, the attention to detail, and the access amenities both on-site and off.¨ In that short time, developers are realizing the importance of Canadians, like the Eilers to the success of the resort occupancy.

"Mexico  has seen a tremendous increase in interest from the Canadian market over the past year." says Gerardo Rojano, vice-president of a marketing group. While the strength of the Canadian dollar and economy have certainly played a big role in this surge in interest, we think Mexico, and more specifically Playa Del Carmen offer a great lifestyle, unique culture and strong value for those seeking a vacation home. Also the fact that Air Canada offers daily service into Cancun has helped raise the profile of the area that Playa Del Carmen offers Canadians.

With the Greg Norman Signature Golf Course, world-class marina and restaurants in neighboring Puerto Aventuras, Playa Del Carmen has something for everyone," The Eilers also add personal safety to the list of reasons why they have purchased in Mexico. "We would definitely recommend Mexico to other Canadians as our experience has been that it is a very safe, clean, friendly, beautiful, well managed place to relax" says Wanda Eilers. "When we are in Mexico whether at the resort or in downtown, we do what we want in a peaceful, relaxed environment, without incident."

Wanda and Mark Eilers Background: The Eilers purchased the first of two condominiums in Mexico in 2007. Then last year 2010, they purchased another apartment condo. The couple and their four children spend Easter and Christmas vacations at the resort, while Wanda and Mark manage to get down there three or four more times on their own.

TULUM

Tulum offers the perfect combination of total relaxation, tranquility and seclusion, yet fill your day with the many interesting and rich activities in the area. The little town of Tulum is slowly developing to offer various services (like an Internet Cafe for example) phone service, and more. There are several very good local restaurants and a few on the beach in the various properties in the hotel area on the beach that are absolutely wonderful and still very cost effective.

The history of Tulum indicates that it was the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya  walled city serving as a major port for Cobá.  The ruins are situated on the tall cliffs, along the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea.. Tulum was one of the last cities inhabited and built by the Mayans, it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico. Old World diseases brought by the Spanish settlers appear to have been the cause of its demise. One of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites, Tulum is today a popular site for tourism.

Tulum has two main points of interest. The beach (Playa) site, and the city (Pueblo) site. The city  sits off of highway 307 running South-North. "El Pueblo", as referred to by locals, is home to most workers of the tourist industry and where many of the stores, supermarkets, two bus stations, inns, hostels and small hotels are found. This section of town has a definite feel of existing mostly to cater to the Tulum ruins. Tulum pueblo is indeed a destination for shopping, great restaurants, a modest night life, studying the language at Instituto Chac-Mool Spanish School, booking tours, banking, shopping for food, local vegetables, fruits, cafes, and local flavor. Do not miss it.

Tulum Playa nests along the coastline that leads into the Sian Ka'an Biosphere [Ecological Reserve], the Caribbean white sandy beaches to the east, an impressive mangrove & wetland reserve to the south. Tulum Playa embraces many of the fancier, ecological, boutique and spa hotels, and it has a decent to excellent selection of restaurants and night spots. There are also a number of affordable beach front cabana-type lodging locations. Walk the beach and simply step in and inquire about accommodations and rates. You will be surprised and delighted.

Featuring Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos is a unique community located on the eastern coast of Mexico overlooking the Caribbean Sea. It is considered the gateway to the Riviera Maya, located 15 minutes south of Cancún International Airport and 36 km north of Playa del Carmen.

In contrast to all the expansion that is taking place along the coastline, Puerto Morelos will retain its small village atmosphere, due to several factors. The government has declared the reef area and the mangroves, which exist behind the town, ecological preserves. Also, unlike Playa del Carmen (which has sustained major growth over the past 10 years), the lot sizes in Puerto Morelos are small with strict building codes enforced. It is the intent of the locals to keep development to a minimum.  People come to Puerto Morelos to avoid the high prices of Cancun and Playa del Carmen. (See more about this at www.canada2playa.com) So the lay of the town caters to keeping its development much less sprawling that its northern and southern neighbors.

The recent history of the town began in 1936 by presidential resolution when the Cooperative known as Puerto Morelos was founded .The demarcation and physical boundaries are delineated in 1944.  In the census of 1950 a population of 80 inhabitants was reported. Since then, the city´s formal demographics are estimated as follows.

DEMOGRAPHICS
Population of Puerto Morelos
Year         Population
1980           672
1990           740
1995           829
2000           892
2005         1.097
2010         2,500

Due to the environment geography of Puerto Morelos (mangrove swamps and coral reef), the human settlements have remained divided along Federal Highway 307 (east and west.) The settlement located on the coast and to the east of the federal highway is known as the "Puerto" or "Old Puerto Morelos".  The settlement immediately to the east of the Federal Highway is known as "Colonia Pescadores". The settlement to the west of the Federal Highway is known as " Colonia Joaquín Zetina Gazca. "

According to the results of the Census of the National Institute of Statistics, Geography and data processing (INEGI) of 2005; Port Morelos reported 1,097 inhabitants, while the Colonia Zetina Gasca, reported 6,629 inhabitants plus 108 more located in the Zona Suburbana, for a total of 7.726 inhabitants. Thus the Puerto Morelos area can be viewed as a collection of a few townships close together which comprise

The new housing zones to the north and west of the Colonia Zetina Gazca are in full population growth:  The zona urbana "Luis Donaldo Colosio", the division "Villas Morelos I, the division "Villas Morelos  II", and the residential area "Buccaneers".  Due to these developments the population in October of 2007 was estimated to be more than 10.000 inhabitants.

Investing in Puerto Morelos real estate is an excellent choice. Whether it is primarily for economic gain or you intend to enjoy the small-town feel of what was once a sleepy Mexican village. However, it is necessary to approach the process seriously. With the American Development and Canada 2 Playa team behind you, you can get a good price and avoid any legal hassles.

Current Trend in Playa Real Estate

This just came in this week from several sources- Playa del Carmen is the city with more expensive real estate in southeastern Mexico, due to its growing tourism industry and economy, said Francisco Ortiz Mijares, president of the Appraisers Association of Quintana Roo.

The excess demand for housing has been caused by the increase in the number of people arriving in the town, due to the opening of more jobs and the important tourist activity. Playa del Carmen has been going thru the same housing boom that took Cancun a few years ago, and right now there is a ¨small favorable dip¨ of and estimanted 20% depreciation in certain areas of the real estate market. So this piece of market info is key if you are out searching for specific areas to find a good deal. Tulum is also anticipated to experience a similar event in less than five years, so this is a good piece of information to keep in mind as you search.

The factors that are causing this favorable dip in real estate in Cancun has been reduced bank lending and housing oversupply. There was a 10% decrease in property values the city center, 5% in the hotel zone and up to 20% in rental rates. So as you are taking a look at all the factors for making a good buying decision, be sure to include this in your time table.

Fact from fiction: Traveling in Mexico´s Destinations

When it comes to finding out the ¨real scoop¨ about Mexico, there are few good questions that need to be asked.  Especially as one gets closer to making that decision to come to visit.  Mainly, one has to really find out the facts from fiction. As we´ve put together several key points on this entry to give you the ¨in road view¨, it should stand to give you the practical side of enjoying a sense of adventure in Mexico while keeping you abreast of the clear signals you must know.

The media reports from the US and Canada do lead the average person into what may be called a ¨dangerous slant.¨ Now for whatever reasons that the media does reinforce this image of Mexico, there are also incredible travel destinations to spend completely positive and safe time.  To travel, meet others, engage community and cultural opportunities, and truly experience the Mexican way. As every country has its issues, Mexico does have travel warnings in certain parts that are at unrest right now.  But the key thing to remember is that areas like Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, Puerto Adventuras, Merida, and the southern Riviera Maya stand as one of the most tranquil and inviting place one could ever wish to experience the easy and freedom of life of Mexico.

The areas that ¨common sense¨would tell you not to hanging around are certain US border towns and a few other Mexican States. You can view this list at the US state Departments site. http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_5440.html

The key thing to remember is that you won´t find one ¨warning¨ article about Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, Merida, and the  Riviera Maya. Why is this? It is because there simply isn´t anything to be on high alert about.  The genuine attraction to these destinations is based on their tourist appeal as a destination. So the community is built on a spirit of service, experience, and mult-culturual immersion- as people from all over the world to land and stay in the Riviera Maya.  Even many Native Mexicans love the Playa Del Carmen experience. It is a town all its own, seperate from that of Cancun, which caters more to the ¨spring breaker type of community.¨

Altogether, there is a ¨stitch of cultural fabric¨ in Mexico´s history that can be further learned about and observed while enganging its beautiful travel destinations.  Learning the language and engaging the culture is ¨part of the beauty.¨ Certianly it is true that one should exercise sound travel planning discretion - or common sense- with the plans of carrying only needed amount of finances, etc. The destination areas have access to ATM´s, credit card usage, and all practical ammenities for ¨setting a home base¨ up to begin your mexican adventure, learn more about what you want to pursue, and enjoy the process safely.

Mexico 2011 Federal Budget Good News for Real Estate

According to several sources...At nearly 3.5 trillion pesos, Mexico’s 2011 federal budget promises a bright future for Mexico real estate investments. The government has dedicated increased resources into ongoing improvements of Mexican infrastructure while offering a small deficit which indicates the government’s commitment to financial responsibility. This news bodes well for the real estate market and especially for Mexico investments as improved infrastructure and fiscal responsibility are sure to spur economic growth, specifically in the Mexico real estate market.

The officially approved Expenditure Budget of the Mexican Federation for the Fiscal Year of 2011 is set at just over 3.4 trillion pesos (nearly 300 million USD). Surpassing the previous proposal by nearly 60 billion pesos, the new budget also reallocates 98 billion pesos from increased taxes in the Revenue Act and the Federal Government’s reduced expenditures.

The budget represents moderate spending (with a deficit less than 0.5% of the GDP) while addressing the need to import areas of investment in the country’s economy. Investors in Mexico real estate will be satisfied by the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure through a controlled spending program. Improvements in infrastructure are sure to draw tourism while bolstering property values.

Furthermore, the 2011 budget allocates nearly 240 billion pesos for the payment of public debt, 18.3 billion pesos for the marina, 35.5 billion pesos for the Ministry of Public Security, and around 50 billion pesos for National Defence. The Ministries of Economy, Public Education, Health, and Labour and Social Welfare were also allocated 16.5 billion, 23 billion, 105.5 billion, and 3.7 billion pesos respectively. Finally, the Ministry of Energy was budgeted approximately 3 billion pesos while Social Development received in excess of 80 billion pesos.

Spending in these areas points to a dedicated effort to improve the standard of living throughout Mexico, as well as the governments desire to increase social stability while confronting social problems. Investment in expat regions will surely improve services and facilities and to maintain the generally safe and strong community atmospheres that already exist.

More importantly, tourism in Mexico will benefit from an unprecedented budget of nearly 5 billion pesos, clearly reflecting the government’s dedication to developing one of its major industries. Real estate buyers will subsequently benefit from tourism spending as improvements in roads, activities, and shopping are directly related to Mexico’s tourism industry.

In short, the 2011 federal budget reflects balanced spending in socially relevant areas that will likely lead to improvements in standard of living and investment in industry which will undoubtedly generate economic growth that benefits Mexicans and Canadian and American expats alike. Clearly, with this new budget the government is proving their dedication to making Mexico a safer, more liveable country.

The direct impacts on Mexico real estate may not be seen immediately but especially for buyers interested in Mexico investments, country wide improvements in infrastructure, education, health, and energy will certainly generate increased property values. Furthermore, these improvements are sure to drive tourism which will provide even more Mexico real estate investment opportunities.

Pre-considerations for buying your home in Mexico

According to a recent article on CNN Mexico- there are a few key factors to consider for selecting (not buying) a new home in Mexico.  Some of the same considerations apply when buying a home in any location. So when you are in the search for your ideal home you can find a property that is ¨not in¨ bad condition but may require a few adjustments to become what you always wanted. However, before making the decision to buy a house or condo for remodeling you need to have in mind the following tips from the experts.

1. Make some accounts with possible vendors. If a remodeling will involve an expenditure of more than 30% of the value of the property it could make a serious financial mistake. According to calculations by a well known bank:  investing more than a third of what it will cost you to raise the property value and the market will make it a big risk.  If you want to sell, the process will be long or you will lower the price, which implies losses.

"People do not buy a house to sell quickly, but rather as an asset that they can fall back on. If there is a need to sell, having too much invested in remodeling can involve a considerable loss," said Sandra Hendrix, commercial director of the real estate consulting.

2. Make sure you can make changes. In some older properties there is a provision known as Facade restriction, i.e., you must respect the outward appearance of the property and details such as fittings and original wooden doors. This can become a problem if a door or window doesn´t have a regular sized fitting.

3. Do not launch into it blindly. Even if the house you really like is great to your viewing- get an assessment and determine the cost of remodeling. This should be defined before you make your purchase.

According to Visa Practical Money Skills website, you must include a game plan between 5 and 10% of the total cost of remodeling to unforeseen circumstances such as an accident or additional material by drilling walls. Once you have an idea of
what it will cost to leave the house like you want it… it will be easier to make a wise decision to purchase.

4. Ask for help and be discretionary yet courteous. If you only change paint and tile bathroom or kitchen you may not have trouble hiring someone who can do it.  However,  if your remodeling involves building another room or take down a wall, having no professional advice may even cause structural damage to property.

The Mexican Federal Consumer Protection (Profeco) recommends that when you take the services of a contractor request a firm timetable for the work they will make in your house, which specify the materials used and what each one.  Also, remember to request bills and guarantees of attachments that may be defective as  it will give you protection in case of problems.

5. Evaluate financing. This is mentioned lastly, as it is does not have the same emphasis and impact for making a good decision on the specifics of home selction. If you live in your new home it is highly suggested that you do not use your credit. And remember to simply be as frugal as you can when looking to procure a loan.
